Metacarpal boss Discussion
The term metacarpal boss refers to prominence of the carpometacarpal joint
of the index and/or middle rays. It is a congenital or spontaneous
development, may affect one or both hands, and is usually painless and
problem free. If prominent, it may be seen as a deformity to the patient,
or may be easily injured. The joint may develop painful arthritic changes
at any age. Treatment options are as for arthritis in other areas,
including antiinflammatory medication, heat, splinting, local steroid
injection, joint debridement and joint fusion.
