Iatrogenic
injuries
One
must avoid iatrogenic injuries that in the accident ward are usually
related to efforts to control bleeding. Fortunately, even major arterial
upper extremity hemorrhage can be controlled with elevation of the arm
and direct pressure. Attempts to control bleeding in the accident ward
with either arterial clamps or a proximal pneumatic tourniquet are dangerous
and inappropriate for anyone other than the surgeon who will be performing
the definitive repairs.
