Complete ligament tear DiscussionA complete ligament tear may result in joint instability and malalignment. This predispose to weakness and degenerative arthritis. Treatment options include conservative treatment (immobilization) and surgery (ligament repair or reconstruction). In general, instability is more reliably corrected with surgery. Surgery involves an incision, often a temporary transarticular pin to maintain joint alignment, a permanent bone anchor and postoperative immobilization and therapy. Specific risks include stiffness, numbness, possible persistent laxity, instability and future degenerative changes. There is usually soreness and swelling of this area for as long as a year following injury or surgery.
