Tendon Injury DiscussionTendon injuries are a difficult, serious and frustrating problem. Conservative treatment has little, if any chance of restoring active motion in the affected area. Even after surgical repair, full motion is usually not achieved. Permanent loss of motion, joint contractures, weakness and stiffness may be unavoidable despite optimum care. Scar tissue glues together the moving surfaces, resulting in adhesions which limit motion. The surgical repair may also rip apart or stretch out. Repeat surgery may be required to release scar tissue, place tendon grafts or other reconstructive procedures. Postoperative splinting and therapy are used. Good cooperation with the postoperative therapy and immobilization prescribed is essential to obtaining the best possible result.
