Thumb CMC ligament reconstruction therapy
0 - 6 weeks:
Thumb Spica Cast
6 weeks:
The Thumb Spica Cast is removed, as well as the K-wire, if present.
A Thumb Spica Splint is applied to be worn between exercises and at night.
Active and Passive Range of Motion exercises are initiated to the digits 15
min/hr.
Gentle active circumduction exercises of the thumb are initiated each hour
outside of the splint.
Active and gentle Passive Range of Motion exercises are initiated to the MCP and
IP joints of the thumb each hour.
7 weeks:
Taping and/or dynamic splinting may be initiated as needed to increase Passive
Range of Motion of the thumb.
8 weeks:
The splint is continued as needed for protection.
Gentle progressive strengthening is initiated using foam, putty and a hand
helper.
