Complex
open wounds
The
dramatic presentation of severe upper extremity wounds may create problems
independent of the specific details of injury. While confronted with the
gruesome wounds, bleeding, amputated parts as well as the immediate demands
of the patient and family ("you can save it, can't you?"), one must
maintain perspective and look for potentially missed injuries such
as blunt abdominal trauma, proximal skeletal injuries, brachial plexus
injuries and compartment syndrome.
